Hitting the Reset Button in the New Year

Red reset button for the new year.

Going into the new year is a chance for a fresh start. In addition to setting new goals and resolutions, it is an opportunity to declutter your mind and your life by hitting the reset button.

There are many things that we wanted to do last year – with good intention – but never got around to. This happens with the craziness of life. Things like:

  • excessive unread emails
  • long lists of unchecked to-do items
  • desktop favorites we never went back to
  • stuff piled up in the corner of the home

All this adds up and we bring a lot of unnecessary noise and clutter from one year into the next. The results are the same – too much going on, so we continue to ignore things.

Instead, take a moment to do some “spring cleaning” in December. Get rid of the distractions. Hit the reset button.

For example:

I have a list of informational articles and courses on Marketing that I save to my notes app. (What can I say? I’m a marketing nerd). My intention is to go through the articles in my free time and take notes on them so that I can learn and improve my marketing skills.

However, as life has gotten busy this year, I slowly started avoiding this task altogether. I dreaded the thought of the long list of marketing guides and articles. And this is something I actually enjoy! However, since I didn’t stay on top of it, the list got too long, and it became overwhelming.

Instead of abandoning it for life, I decided to wipe the slate clean. I deleted all the current articles and now I have room to add more. This allows me to hit the reset button on this task, but it also gives me the added benefit of focusing my attention on the latest findings and newest guides that interest me.

The key here is to not feel guilty about it. Give yourself permission to “throw out” anything that is not benefitting you at the end of the year.

It will feel like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders. You can stand up tall again and enter the new year with a clear mind – ready to set goals, stay focused, and crush the year ahead!

Best,

Eric

  1. Reset is my jam. I can relate to clearing out email and cleaning out the clutter in my home. I love the feeling of deleting, eating healthy, dry January, purging stuff that doesn’t serve me, and finding places for my clutter. It’s liberating and makes me feel empowered to take on the new year!
